End of Summer Season Expedition

Lough Derg  Camp and Sail
2
4 Crew, 6 Wayfarers and 6 Adults with 2 Safety boats camped at Mount Shannon on Lough Derg. The weather gave us an exciting time rarely dropping below force 5/6. the boats sailed to Scariff.  The return after leaving the meandering river was sufficiently windy for the genoas to be the order of the day. The following day the crews had a blast sailing south towards Killaloe on the way lunch was had sheltered behind a small island amongst the reeds. The dinghies set sail towards a tower house that we had spied the previous day and had joking thought that it would be a good place to have tea sometime.  It was discovered that it had be renovated from a ruin over the last 10 years and was open to the public for heritage week, just in time for us to visit and sample the delights of an island castle only accessible by water, fabulous.
That evening as it was so dark the night sail became a tow with the dinghies bedecked in navigation lights (looking like little fairy boats) each vessel with a VHF, we set off for Holy Island and to walk to the Tower, a glorious adventure was had, returning in the pitch dark to be towed into our little harbour one by one with Jean acting as a light house to light the entrance with a waving torch.
We revisited the island by safety-boat to see what it was like during daylight hours. It was far better at night without the gale.
All returned home happy but exhausted from the adventure, brilliant. Thank you all very much who made it happen.

Messing about on boats ......

Safety and ensuring an enjoyable experience on the land and water are priorities, so that whether you are sailing with us for a day, a week or longer, you will know why people like us love "messing about in boats".

Wise Words

"Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing— absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing."

- The Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Grahame
